Nehemiah 2:13-20 First Lesson
13. I went out by night by the Valley Gate past the Dragon’s Spring and to the Dung Gate, and I inspected the walls of Jerusalem that had been broken down and its gates that had been destroyed by fire.
14. Then I went on to the Fountain Gate and to the King’s Pool; but there was no place for the animal I was riding to continue.
15. So I went up by way of the valley by night and inspected the wall. Then I turned back and entered by the Valley Gate, and so returned.
16. The officials did not know where I had gone or what I was doing; I had not yet told the Jews, the priests, the nobles, the officials, and the rest that were to do the work. Decision to Restore the Walls
17. Then I said to them, “You see the trouble we are in, how Jerusalem lies in ruins with its gates burned. Come, let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem, so that we may no longer suffer disgrace.”
18. I told them that the hand of my God had been gracious upon me, and also the words that the king had spoken to me. Then they said, “Let us start building!” So they committed themselves to the common good.
19. But when Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah the Ammonite official, and Geshem the Arab heard of it, they mocked and ridiculed us, saying, “What is this that you are doing? Are you rebelling against the king?”
20. Then I replied to them, “The God of heaven is the one who will give us success, and we his servants are going to start building; but you have no share or claim or historic right in Jerusalem.”

1 Timothy 2:1-4 Second Lesson
1. First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for everyone,
2. for kings and all who are in high positions, so that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and dignity.
3. This is right and is acceptable in the sight of God our Savior,
4. who desires everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.

Romans 13:8-14 Epistle
8. Owe no one anything, except to love one another; for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.
9. The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery; You shall not murder; You shall not steal; You shall not covet”; and any other commandment, are summed up in this word, “Love your neighbor as yourself.”
10. Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore, love is the fulfilling of the law. An Urgent Appeal
11. Besides this, you know what time it is, how it is now the moment for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we became believers;
12. the night is far gone, the day is near. Let us then lay aside the works of darkness and put on the armor of light;
13. let us live honorably as in the day, not in reveling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in quarreling and jealousy.
14. Instead, put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires. Footnotes

Luke 20:19-26 Gospel
19. When the scribes and chief priests realized that he had told this parable against them, they wanted to lay hands on him at that very hour, but they feared the people. The Question about Paying Taxes
20. So they watched him and sent spies who pretended to be honest, in order to trap him by what he said, so as to hand him over to the jurisdiction and authority of the governor.
21. So they asked him, “Teacher, we know that you are right in what you say and teach, and you show deference to no one, but teach the way of God in accordance with truth.
22. Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to the emperor, or not?”
23. But he perceived their craftiness and said to them,
24. “Show me a denarius. Whose head and whose title does it bear?” They said, “The emperor’s.”
25. He said to them, “Then give to the emperor the things that are the emperor’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”
26. And they were not able in the presence of the people to trap him by what he said; and being amazed by his answer, they became silent. The Question about the Resurrection
